Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a system in which consumers pay a farmer in advance for agricultural products. CSAs help local farmers connect directly with the consumer and offer a variety of in-season vegetables and fruits. Some also offer eggs, meat, poultry, baked goods, and honey. While a majority of CSAs operate in the spring and summer, some also offer winter programs.

In the past few years, variations on the CSA model have sprung up offering local food delivery and pick-up services which may or may not be offered directly by the farmer who grew the food. While technically not a CSA in the strict terms of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, these services, sometimes referred to as third party CSAs or local food delivery/pickup services, are valuable to the consumer and offer additional options for them to obtain local foods.

On this part of the site, I have listed those services as well as "true" CSAs. As with any purchase that you make, you should feel comfortable in asking the service provider or farmer questions about how he/she obtains the food offered before making a final decision about your purchase.

Participation in a CSA or local food delivery/pick-up service is a great way to support your local growers and enjoy the abundance of Indiana's fresh, in-season, and local foods.

If you would like to list your CSA or service, please send an email to victoria@goinglocal-info.com .
