Schacht Farm Hosts Open Farm Day
When I drove up the winding road to Schacht Farm in Bloomington, Indiana, a peaceful calm came over me as I took in the beautiful southern Indiana view of idyllic blue skies, cotton candy clouds, and bright green pastures. I entered the farm's drive and discovered the recently renovated 1934 limestone milkhouse that is now home to Matt and Mandy Corry who, in 2005, started the farm with 4 ewes and 2 rams and thoughts of perhaps adding a couple of laying hens. Now, three short years later, with their customers clamoring for more and more of their naturally raised products, the young couple has a thriving operation selling Icelandic lamb, chicken, eggs, turkey, pork, beef, fleece, and handmade soaps. Matt and Mandy adhere to humane treatment for the animals and sustainable practices for their land which is never subject to chemicals or pesticides. The animals are pasture raised without hormones or antibiotics.
The day I visited the farm, it was clear who was in charge of the operation--Isa. As I opened the car door, Isa enthusiastically greeted me and I instantly fell in love with the spunky tri-color Icelandic sheep dog. Never too far from our feet as Mandy showed me around the farm, Isa's joyful spirit personified the positive energy I felt during my time there. There's a noticeable feeling of love and genuine care from Mandy and Matt for the land and the animals that they raise.
The Corrys encourage their customers to come to their farm both to learn about how they raise their animals and to enjoy the beauty of the property. On Sunday, May 18, the Corrys are hosting an Open Farm Day and are inviting the public to come out for the afternoon. They'll have over 500 chickens on pasture and plenty of adorable lambs. Mandy suggests bringing a picnic lunch with you. And don't forget your camera. No doubt, Isa will be ready for her close-up!
