Several weeks ago, a site visitor sent me an email about Purple Rock Farm in Frankfort, Indiana. She wrote, "They have the best chicken I've ever tasted". Although Frankfort is just north of us, I'd not heard of Travis and Gina Sheets, who own the farm and was happy to have the introduction.
The Sheets sell pastured chicken and turkey, Scottish Highland beef, and eggs to support their missionary work. When I asked Travis why he thought his chickens received such an enthusiastic recommendation, he credited the praise received with his decision to raise the birds "the old fashioned way" on pasture where they happily wander around in the fresh air and sunshine while they eat plenty of grass, clover, bugs, and a wholesome, high protein blend of feed including soybeans, corn, alfalfa, and oats. Travis likes to call his poultry "Grandma's chicken"--a tribute to the tasty, full flavor of the meat.
In addition to managing his farm, Travis is the Market Manager for the Clinton County Farmer's Market where he has decided this year to "test the waters" with a new product--locally raised rainbow trout. A whole trout stuffed with fresh herbs and lemon slices grilled to moist perfection on a charcoal grill is about as good as it gets for a simple summer supper.
Travis is raising the trout in a spring fed pond on his property in Frankfort and will be offering them on opening day of the Clinton County Farmers' Market which is Saturday, June 7th. The market opens at 7:30 a.m. and the line for that trout will start right behind me!
