Apple Family Farm

Apple_farm_sign_2_2Once you've visited Apple Family Farm in McCordsville, you'll quickly understand why folks come from as far as Chicago to visit and buy produce, Icelandic fleeces, eggs, pasture raised chickens, and grass fed beef, veal, and lamb.

Step out of your car and the official greeter of the day may be an affectionate little barn cat or a frisky puppy. But it's not long before Debbie Apple appears to welcome you to her family's labor of love. Debbie, her husband Mark, and their two children, Brayden and Rhayna, are the 3rd and 4th generations to farm this land. They use no hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, or herbicides on the farm and are committed to providing their customers with healthy, delicious, and nutritious products.

In addition to a quaint farm store where you can buy their products as well as those from other Indiana producers such as Skillington Farms and Swiss Connection , the Apples offer goat and cow shares. There are farm tours where visitors can learn about and experience daily farm activities including gathering eggs, animal care, and spinning wool. Debbie, who is completing her culinary degree at IVY Tech and is active in Slow Food and the Weston A. Price Foundation, recently began offering cooking classes in her on-site commercial kitchen. The classes, which are offered every other Tuesday, include preparation of homemade mixes, yogurt and other dairy product making, and instruction in a variety of traditional food preservation methods that most of us were not fortunate enough to learn from our mothers or grandmothers. On-site day care is available during the sessions.

Img_0580_3If you've ever wondered what it would be like to work on a farm or would like more information about how to successfully run the farm you now have the Apple's can help. Their School of Farming and Homesteading offers programs covering everything from bookkeeping and pasture management to organic gardening.

When you visit, pick up some of Debbie's ground beef and eggs to make Joe's Special. This versatile, quick, and easy dish is good for breakfast, lunch or supper. Download joes_special.pdf
